Make Money Online Blogging ( Beginner’s Guide )
How to make money with a blog: Everything you need to know
Everyone, absolutely everyone when we started we have asked ourselves this question, or more generally “how to make money with a website. “
And the first thing that comes to mind is those ads that we see on many websites. But there is a whole world beyond Adsense when it comes to monetizing a blog.
Pay close attention to this article because whether you want to know how to make money with a blog or if you are still looking for different ways to generate income online, this post will interest you.
Warning, this is a long article, but I don’t want to leave any point untouched.
Ready to find out how to blog and make money? Well, let’s get down to business!
Can you make money from a blog?
Of course, it is.
If you have read any of my monthly reports you have been able to verify that I can generate money with a blog on the internet.
In fact, making money with a blog is something that is available to anyone (as long as you make an effort to get it and are patient).
However, although the income does not give me to live on my website, I do have it very clear that you can live off a blog.
But how much money can you make with a blog?
It is a rather difficult question to answer because it depends on many factors.
You can see cases of bloggers who barely earn a few cents a month to American bloggers who make up to 6 figures a month. So knowing how much a blogger earns depends on many factors (time, authority, business model, ways to monetize it, etc.).
In the Hispanic world, it is increasingly common to find a blogger who manages to make a living from his own online business but, as I have said before: you can make money with a blog, although it is not easy or fast.
So if you think that with a blog you will earn a lot of money without effort and in a few months it will be better if you dedicate yourself to something else.
How do you make money with a blog?
The first thing you should know is that you do not have to dedicate yourself full time to the blog to make money with it. But it is clear that the more time and effort you put into your project, the greater the profits.
To know how to make money with a blog on the internet you will have to invest time and money in training and in your project just like in any other business.
Mandatory steps to make money with a blog
A professional blog is an online business and you have to treat it as such.
So if you are a blogger who has not been around for a long time or if you are still not sure how to make money with a blog, here are 5 basic but essential steps.
1. Create a blog
Obviously, if you want to make money with a blog you will have to have a blog.
Can you make money with a free blog?
This is one of the most common questions and the answer is clear: yes.
However, you must take this very carefully. Free is almost never the best option and in this case, it is clear that it is not.
When you decide to create a free blog you have to bear in mind that you will not have full control over it and the possibilities of making money with your blog are quite limited.
This comes at great risk, especially if you are serious about your blog. The free platform you use to create it can close your blog or change its policies to monetize it without notifying you. Therefore it is a risk that many people are not willing to commit.
My recommendation to have absolute control over the ways to earn money with a blog and over the blog itself is to create a professional blog with your own hosting. For an expense of between $5 and $10 per month with your own hosting, you can save yourself a lot of problems.
2. Write valuable content
The job of a blogger is to write articles that are truly useful and of value to the user.
To make money with a blog you need visits and readers. And to have visitors and readers you must write good content.
So once you have created your blog, it’s time to get down to work and write content that solves a user need :
- Fix a problem.
- Provide information on what you are looking for.
- Calm and appease their fears.
- Teach something new (tutorials, guides, …).
Write excellent articles and posts, speak from your knowledge and experience, and solve or contribute what the reader is looking for. That is really valuable content.
3. Establish relationships outside the blog
In addition to creating valuable content, you must network.
Create relationships and a community outside the blog both in the offline world and through social networks and other blogs and websites.
4. Strengthen your brand and authority
Train yourself and keep writing and improving the valuable content you provide.
Work on social networks and establish yourself as a benchmark in your sector.
This is not done overnight, it takes a lot of effort, time, and perseverance but it is essential to build your authority and confidence in the face of readers.
As you blog and participate in social networks, you should think about what kind of reputation you want and are earning.
How do you want others to recognize you, by your brand, or by your name? Do they associate the name of your blog with your theme? What would you like to be known for?
All these questions you should always keep in mind because they are the ones that will shape your brand.
5. Choose the best ways to earn money with your blog
Before starting your project, you should already be clear about what ways to earn money you are going to use on your blog. Even the normal thing is that even if you have not created a blog of much authority, you do get some money thanks to it.
However, until you have worked through the previous steps, you will not start making abundant money with your blog. And that is why I have placed it in step number 5.
But before looking at the best ways to make money from a blog there are several things you should know:
- Part of a blogger’s income does not come directly from writing articles on his blog. That is, a blog is not only a method of generating income but through it, you can reach other sources of income. Examples of this are blogs with a store, those that offer info products such as ebooks or courses, etc.
- Making a blog and making money with it takes time. It is something that I have already repeated on the blog, but you must be clear that without work, effort, and perseverance you will not achieve anything. Luckily this is something that is achieved if you really put your mind to it.
- The key to making money from a blog is to diversify your sources of income. Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket.
- There is no perfect way to make a blog profitable, and this is the best. You don’t have to focus on a specific method. Each blogger has their own combination and percentages from each source of income. There are many possibilities and your duty is to find the best possible combination for your project.
- The theme directly influences the income and the way to earn money with a blog. It is not the same to have a personal business blog where income from the sale of products, info products, and services prevails, to a mega-blog where most of the money will come from Adsense advertising.
The 6 ways to make money with a blog
There are many ways, but large ranges can be classified into 6 sources of income on a website or blog. So after the previous notes, it is time to see the different ways to generate income with a blog on the internet.
1. Sale of physical products
The classic sale of a lifetime but through an online portal, be it a pure and simple blog or an online store with a blog.
More and more bloggers decide to write and sell their books through their blogs.
In addition to using more traditional advertising and selling them in bookstores, they take advantage of their online channel to sell their books directly to their readers.
As if it were an online store, they are in charge of processing and sending orders so that they reach each client. Selling books through a blog seems to be the most appropriate option for all writers and bloggers who love reading.
On the other hand, physical books are also often combined with ebooks to sell them on your blog or on Amazon. So the client chooses the format that he likes best.
Are you a handyman? Do you love DIY and craft items? Consider using your blog to sell handmade things through it or using Etsy or Handmade at Amazon.
Nowadays having a blog with your own store is very easy thanks to the WordPress Woocommerce plugin.
However, standing out from the crowd is not an easy task. So using a blog and being consistent with it is essential.
Of course, you can sell already created products and use your blog to promote them.
This is the typical case of an online store: you buy the cheapest products from a supplier or wholesaler and take care of selling them more expensively through your website and sending the orders.
But the thing does not end here. You don’t have to sell your products. Don’t even send them yourself.
This is the case with dropshipping.
With this model, you are in charge of selling and promoting products from a third company (not all companies do dropship) and this company is in charge of sending the order. Of course, this third company takes a commission for selling and sending their products to your customers.
2. Digital products or info products
The current trend is to sell an info-product (or digital product).
Selling digital products has many advantages, but without a doubt, the most important is that you have no shipping or production costs and that the customer receives the product instantly.
There are so many digital things that you can sell with a blog. Let’s see some of them:
Photographs and images
Are you a photographer or a graphic designer? Why not boost your authority and your income by promoting your images and giving tips on this topic in a blog?
As with physical products, this option is paramount for writers.
However, the theme of the ebook can be anyone, so selling ebooks is a good option for any theme.
Of course, your ebooks must be worth it. An ebook is a book and has to be extensive, it is not worth 20 or 40 pages on a theme.
Best of all, you don’t have to focus on the sale of the ebook only on your blog. You can use Amazon to sell it perfectly. In my opinion, the key to making enough money with ebooks is to make more than one and take advantage of all the platforms to make it known.
What better way than to be a benchmark in your sector and sell courses on your subject?
This time your blog is the best way to offer the courses. Of course, this takes a lot of work but it is where the blogs that make the most money in US really earn money.
The format can range from ebooks as we saw in the previous point, to courses in membership communities, videos, webinars, or even audios (it depends on the subject, of course).
Sell software, apps, templates, or plugins
If you are a programming crack and you want to make money with a blog you will only have to get to work.
Create a blog about programming or a type of software and sell your own software through it.
There are many authors of templates and plugins for WordPress, so it is clear that it is a market with a lot of demand. But of course, the possibilities are much wider. From templates for other CMS to software for companies or mobile apps.
Once again, the limit is in your imagination (and your knowledge).
Sale of blogs and websites
Can you use a blog to sell other blogs and websites?
Of course, it is.
Of course, as I mentioned above, none of these things will sell if you do not convey confidence and really show that you do what you do well.
The process is not easy and each blog or website takes its job to do it. But if you do it well and on top of that you position the web or blog, you will not be short of buyers.
You can even sell your own blog if you decide to start another or because you have already tired. As a general rule, your blog will be worth a factor of x12 or x24 of your monthly earnings. That is, if you earn $100 per month, your blog should be worth between $1,200 and $2,400.
We come to what is probably the fastest way to start making money with a blog.
Everyone is good at something. And if you get a position as a benchmark in your subject, you will not lack the clients who request your services.
At this point, you have to think like a freelancer. Take advantage of your skills and think about what services you could offer. A very common one is the mentoring or consulting service on what you excel at.
When selling services on your blog you must bear in mind that your time is limited. It is not a scalable way to make money with a blog but if you are looking for “quick money” offering services is a good strategy. But your benefits will depend on your time or the people you delegate to. Still, I think it is the best way to start making money with a professional website.
Here are some examples :
- Content writer
- Online tutor (of any topic that occurs to you)
- Graphic designer
- Web designer
- Virtual assistant
- Video or image editor
- Social Media Manager
- Psychology sessions
- Web analyst
- Community Manager
4. Affiliate Marketing
By now you should know what affiliate marketing is.
As an affiliate, you will be in charge of promoting the products or services of a third party (company or individual professional) and for each sale, you make with your affiliate links you will get a percentage as commission.
This source of income is one of the most powerful in the world of blogging. And it is widely used both in professional and personal blogs as well as in niche blogs focused on affiliation. Check Out This Free Training Here.
The way to join an affiliate program is very simple:
- You are looking for a platform with affiliate programs or you contact a professional who offers it to sell some of their products.
- You create your account as an affiliate.
- The platform will offer you unique affiliate links for you and be able to count your sales.
- You promote on your blog the products or services of which you are affiliated (with your affiliate link).
- For every sale made through your link, you get a commission.
- You get paid at the end of the month or when you reach a minimum amount of income with the platform.
As you can see, the operation is quite simple.
As for the ways to be an affiliate, you can find from independent professionals who offer it to many platforms. The most used platforms in affiliate marketing are:
- Awin (former Zanox)
Making money on a blog with advertising is a much more complex world than typical Adsense advertising.
In this field we must distinguish 3 different types because not all blogs are used to earn a lot of money with advertising:
- Place ads on your website
- Sponsored posts or reviews
1. Place ads on your blog
We enter the most popular part of internet advertising: allowing the appearance of ads on your website.
We have all seen these types of ads since they are usually placed in strategic areas: sidebar, header, footer, or within the content.
As a blogger and, depending on the theme and way of earning money that best suits your blog, you must discern between placing ads that compromise the user experience or not using them in certain places.
The profitability of these ads will depend on the visits your website has. And within these types of ads we can find:
- CPC Advertising Ads
- CPA Advertising Ads
- Private Ads
1. Advertising Ads CPC (cost per click)
Although there are more platforms that use this type of advertising, the best known and most used is Google Adsense.
Once you register on one of these platforms, they will give you different ad codes to place throughout your website.
The ads that are displayed on your blog are not chosen by you, it is Google who analyzes the theme of your website and will show ads related to it (if there are any) or ads that interest your reader.
You will get a small profit for each click that users make on the ads. The price of each click will depend on the platform, the theme, the keywords of the page, and the competition in that niche.
Can you really make money with Google Adsense?
This is another fairly frequent question in the blogging world. The answer is Yes. You can make money (and a lot) with Google Adsense.
In fact, if you want to know how to make money with a blog from Blogger (Google’s free blogging platform), this is one way to do it.
The downside of using Adsense ads as a way to make money from a blog is that you will need thousands of visits to be really profitable and not all blogs are capable of reaching a sufficient number of visits.
This will depend on the niche of your blog but for professional or personal blogs it is not an option. For example, in blogs of this type, you would not earn more than € 10 with 10,000 visits per month. A minimum benefit for the large number of visits you would have.
So what types are the blogs that make money with Adsense?
However, for mega-niche blogs or sought after niches in order to monetize with AdSense, it can be a good idea. These types of blogs focus on getting large amounts of daily visits to be able to earn enough money thanks to Google Adsense ads.
But for this, you will have to do a good market study to find niches that pay well per click, and also, you will have to have high knowledge in SEO to get a good number of visits that will report acceptable income at the end of the month.
You can use SemRush Keyword Planner to find out your keyword competition.
2. CPA Advertising (Cost Per Action)
A lesser-known type of blog advertising is CPA or Cost Per Action advertising.
As its name suggests, you will receive a commission every time a user takes a certain action.
And what actions are these?
The actions are very varied; from leaving your phone number or your contact email to conducting surveys, filling out a form, reserving a product or service, or even making a small purchase.
The operation is the same as with CPC ads: you put the ads on your blog and if the user clicks on your ad and performs the action, you will receive money.
You have to take into account both sides of the coin in this way of making money with a blog. On the one hand, if it is already difficult for a user to click on an ad (we already saw it in CPC advertising), the more difficult it will be for them to perform an action on the landing page that the ad leads to.
The other side of the coin is that, although the conversions are lower, the commissions are significantly higher than what you would earn with CPC advertising.
You have to know that users are reluctant to leave any of their data or even to fill out a survey, so if you decide on this way of monetization you must create a blog with a lot of authority so that users trust what you promote.
3. Private ads
Private ads are pretty much the same as CPC ads.
In their visual form, they are practically the same as any other advertisement. They are usually used in banners, gifs, or buttons in the sidebar or in the header of blogs.
The difference lies in the way the money is earned.
Private advertisers usually contact the blogger directly and a fixed price agreement is reached to put their banner on the blog for a certain period (usually monthly).
As a blogger, you can also contact advertisers and offer some kind of agreement. Of course, the earnings you will receive depend directly on the authority and visibility of your blog.
These ads are more profitable since you do not charge for each click you make, but for keeping the ad visible on your website for a certain time.
2. Sponsored reviews and posts
If you have been reading blogs for a while, you may have noticed that there are certain types of articles where a review or review of a product or company related to the theme of the blog is made.
These types of items are usually items purchased to promote said company or product.
In this case, the company usually gets in touch with the blogger to talk about it or its product. However, there are also platforms where they put companies and bloggers in contact.
The company in question pays a fixed price for the article and the blogger will be in charge of accepting or not the proposal. Sometimes the company offers the text directly and other times it is the blogger himself who must write the article.
They can also be affiliate marketing articles but these are usually easily distinguished by the greater number of links and by the affiliate id that those links carry.
If your blog is also very popular or you include a weekly podcast or video, it is very common to find companies that offer you to be your sponsor in exchange for you to promote them.
This type of sponsor can be with money or with a free service or product from the company. It is a type of private ads but it does not necessarily have to go in ads within the web (they can go in the newsletter, as recommendations in videos, etc.).
Tips about Sponsors:
- Don’t be afraid to negotiate. The blog is yours and you have full control over it. It is you who must set the price you think is convenient.
- Learn to say NO. Many times you will receive companies that want to be your Sponsor and that are not 100% in accordance with your principles as a blogger. Saying is not something that you will have to do many times and it is better to do it than compromise the trust that your readers have in you.
- Don’t be content with receiving free stuff. Having paid things for free is cool, I’m not telling you no. But we don’t always need them, and in that case, you shouldn’t agree to have something for free if you don’t need it. If they really want to be your sponsor, they will offer you something you need, be it money or another service.
Asking your readers for a donation through Paypal is something that is not very widespread. However, it works quite well on English-speaking blogs.
And it is one of the easiest ways to receive money. If you write quality content, surely there will be a reader who would support your blog by sending you a small donation.
It is one of the easiest ways to start, you will only have to use the code provided by Paypal for this purpose.
If you work a bit at the time of requesting it (for example, the typical “Invite me to a cane”) and you generate really useful content, the reader will see nothing wrong with sending you a donation. In fact, I have done it sometime.
Who has not seen YouTubers or streamers on Twitch accept donations for entertaining with their content?
Well, in the case of blogs it is exactly the same.
Of course, this way of making money with a blog will hardly cover the expenses. But that’s exactly what donations are for, right?
How to start making money with a blog
After all this article it is normal that you are more than saturated with all the ways you have to generate income with a blog.
But you should know that absolutely all bloggers start the same and yes, having a blog makes money if you work for it.
So I have tried to collect in this article everything you need to start making money and increase your income. We come to the final part of the article.
6 Tips to make money with a blog
It is a long process and there are no magic formulas to achieve it. What works for a blogger does not necessarily have to work for you.
There is no best way to make money with a blog. Everything will depend on the theme, the type of blog, and your personality when choosing sources of income.
Now you know all the techniques and methods to make money with a blog, but it is you who have to get down to work. So to finish I leave you with 6 essential tips to start making money with your project:
1. Research and think about which ways go best with your personality:
Analyze the viability of your blog according to the different ways to earn money. Ask yourself questions like these:
- Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
- Do you like working with clients?
- Do you have a penchant for teaching?
- Do you like the theme of the blog?
- How are the other blogs on your topic doing?
- Are you going to dedicate yourself fully to your project or do you just want to earn extra money?
2. Choose a theme that you like
Passion is always spoken of as a fundamental pillar to create the base of a blog.
The truth is that you will spend a lot of time with your project (probably years) so having a passion for what you do is a plus. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be your great passion, especially if you do affiliate or niche blogging.
The important thing is that you like what you do, be it the theme or the simple fact of doing niche blogs.
3. There must be demand
When you create a blog, whatever type it is, it should be something that you know is going to be seen.
The theme chosen should be something that people really look for or that generates a solution to a more or less general problem within your audience.
For niche blogging, this translates to keyword themes with many monthly searches. The more searches the keyword has, the better, but the more difficult it will be to the position.
As for professional or personal blogs, the goal should be the same: reach the largest number of people who have the problem you solve. The more people there are, the more likely they are to win more money.
4. Don’t stop training
If the world of blogging has something, and the internet in general, it is that it is constantly evolving.
You must train yes or yes. New disciplines, techniques, social networks, and tools come out every day. As in any profession, your duty is to be up-to-date in all this to learn the new ways of monetizing and reaching more public.
Fortunately, this is achieved by experimenting, reading, and even taking a course. But everything is at your disposal.
5. Diversity is the key
I have already mentioned it before and it is something that you must be very clear about. Preferably do not focus on a single method of monetizing your blog. Combining multiple sources of income minimizes risks and potential losses.
Imagine that a way to monetize is no longer profitable or is prohibited by some law. Make sure you have more than one monetization avenue so you don’t look silly if this happens.
6. Don’t get frustrated
“The one too follows her, get her”.
This is true of any project you undertake.
I know I will seem very “mindful” but it is reality.
You already know how to make money with blogging but making money with a blog is a project that you should take long term. This takes a lot of work and you have to be patient and consistent.
Now is your turn:
Do you have a blog and you can’t earn what you think you should? What problems do you have and what ways to earn money with a blog do you use?
This article contains some affiliate links which means if you get any service or signup I will be getting a % of the commission but don’t worry it won’t cost you any additional single penny. And don’t worry I haven’t posted or mentioned which I haven’t tested by myself.
